My Favorite Albums Of 2011

2011 was a lot like 2010 for me in that i didn’t really seek out a lot of new music and was more excited about albums i already own getting deluxe reissues than anything current. call it a product of aging. call it a product of laziness. call it being overwhelmed by just how easy it is to find and hear new music and doing to my best to just avoid shit. so i don’t consider this list to be the Best Records of the Year. but these were my personal favorite Albums Of 2011.

Davila 666- Tan Bajo

maybe i should’ve paid more attention in Spanish class in 10th grade cuz then i might know what the fuck these Puerto Rican garage rockers were singing about. regardless of language barriers this was easily one of my favorite albums of this or any year. Menudo On Drugs (as they call themselves) making a caterwaul of glorious rock n roll noise channeling The Stooges Fun House by way of Guided By Voices being sung by your wasted punk rock friends from high school. Rock N Roll is alive and well, it just doesn’t speak English anymore.

Turf War- Years Of Living Dangerously

it’s hard for me not to be hyperbolic when i talk about how much i love this fucking record. the story of 1000 nights of bad choices and worse luck fueled by booze and self destruction. every song sounds like an anthem for the lovable losers.

The Horrors- Skying

England’s funniest haricuts drop their My Bloody Valentine obsession and replace it with a fuckton of Psychedelic Furs and Echo and The Bunnymen producing the best album to sit in your room and space out to in 2011.

Minks- By The Hedge

kids influenced by C86 and Head On The Door era Cure (and probably a little Belle & Sebastian too) make gothy dreampop twee masterpiece. let’s wear all black every single day and hate the world together forever.

Ty Segall- Goodbye Bread & Ty Rex

the current king of fuzz pop mellows out and dropped his best fucking record yet on our asses and just for kicks he did an EP of T.Rex covers too.

M83- Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming

as a general rule i am not a fan of double albums. it’s probably because i’ve always believed less is more and also i’ve never really listened to any double album that i didn’t think could’ve been a better record minus about 5 songs and i feel the same way about this record. i also don’t think it’s nearly a good as Saturdays = Youth but M83 still does a better job than anyone of combining my love of Shoegaze and New Wave and turning it into a fake soundtrack for a French adaptation of a John Hughes movie.

The Icarus Line- Wildlife

i’m stuck inside of Los Angeles With The Punk Rock Blues Again.

Black Lips- Arabia Mountain

they might be one of the biggest indie rock bands around but they’ll always just be the kids who i booked at the 40 Watt that got banned for trying to burn their drum set on stage. this year they hooked up with Mark Ronson and took their sloppy garage punk sound and turned it into slick polished pop. a dance party for the end of the world. plus a song about Spiderman being molested as a little kid ends up being one of the best jams of the year. weird. disturbing. awesome.

Grape Soda- Form A Sign
The best band in Athens, GA make the most danceable party album of the year with nothing but spaced out organ and drums. Heavily energetic dub influenced indie pop. Joyous. Catchy. Fun.

Jacuzzi Boys- Glazin’

another solid album by one of the best power pop bands around. Plus they inspired some teenage girls to make the greatest NSFW music video in the history of the universe. Singing vaginas and it isn't even dirty.

Smith Westerns- Dye It Blonde

Chicago brats making pure glam pop. this album is the sound of my nuggets boxed set getting in a fight with my Smiths records. The songs Dance Away and All Die Young were two of the my songs of the year.

Kurt Vile- Smoke Ring For My Halo

every year needs some good sad bastard music. Kurt makes the saddest and it isn't in some weakass Bon Iver bullshit wa.

There were other notable artists who had a good song or two like Crystal Stilts reverbed out "through the floor" or Peaking Lights total fucking jam "All The Sun That Shines". Some other good music by Dead Ghosts, Woven Bones, Real Estate, Wild Nothing, Jeff The Brotherhood, Total Babes, Surf City, and Nobunny is worth checking out. If you have a Spotify then I recommend giving all these a listen. If you love rock n roll then there is still cool shit out there worth finding. Hell even the Black Keys, a band I think makes boring dad rock, put out an album that ain't half bad this year.

goodbye 2011. since the world is gonna end next year lets hope their are some fucking awesome albums in 2012.

Not The Best Of 2011

i typically do not like to talk shit about people’s music because it doesn’t really bother me what people listen to as long as they don’t make me listen to it but then there albums i was either a. looking forward to that totally let me down or b. are impossible to escape and drive me fucking crazy. these are the albums of 2011 that i didn’t care so much for.

The Strokes Angles
i have never apologized of my love for the Strokes. they make really solid pop music and they helped bring back an interest in 70s punk and jeans that actually fit. and i was so ready for this album to be my jam in 2011…but then i started reading the interviews and it became pretty obvious that even the Strokes thought this thing was a piece of shit. AND then it came out and i bought it anyways and FUCK does it suck. this is the sound of a band that doesn’t care about being a band anymore.

Dum Dum Girls Only In Dreams
i am not sure what happened with this band in the course of a year but i really fucking hate this overproduced piece of shit of an album that sounds like Wilson Phillips trying to sound like Mazzy Star.

Zola Jesus Contatus
i really like Zola Jesus. a lot. but after listening to this record i started to get the feeling she was just a one trick goth pony making the same record over and over again. it’s not that i don’t like this album so much as i don’t ever listen to this album after being super excited about it.

Jay Z/Kanyne West Watch The Throne
i used to really like both of these guys. Jay Z for his ability to produce solid jams and Kanye for his ability to be a crazy asshole that pissed everyone off like noone has since Axl Rose or Liam and Noel….but this album might as well have been called FUCK YOU WE ARE RICH AND FAMOUS AS HELL AND YOU WILL BUY THIS NO MATTER WHAT KID OF WEAK ASS SONGS THAT COULDN’T EVEN BE B-SIDES ON THE BLACK ALBUM WE PUT ON THIS SHIT.

Washed Out Within and Without
i get bored just thinking about this record. i know it isn’t Washed Out’s fault that dumbass music writers came up with Chillwave…but seriously fuck Chillwave. fuck any kind of waves that aren’t new or no.

Yuck Yuck
i love Dinosaur Jr. and Sebadoh too, but this album has exactly 1 good song.

Pains Of Being Pure at Heart Belong

everything that i loved about their debut is completely missing from this follow up. mostly the songs just suck.

Fucked Up David Comes To Life
quoting a friend, “Dude, it’s like Fugazi and Pink Floyd made an album together.” me, “that sounds like the worst fucking idea ever.”

Cults Cults
i really hate Ipod commercial bands.

Bon Iver Bon Iver
the literal most boring music ever made. this is Coldplay for people who say they hate Coldplay. i wish someone would burn this dude’s cabin down.

Radiohead The King Of Limbs
i get it. you guys hate making rock music. i just don’t care anymore.

Sofia Coppola and M83 should probably make movies together.

whenever i watch the video for "Midnight City" it makes me think of Sofia Coppola directing an X-Men or New Mutants movie with M83 doing the score.

Halloween 1977 @ the 40 Watt was fun.

Monday night a bunch of local musicians from Athens and one Atlanta band (Turf War) put together a 70s Punk themed Halloween show at the 40 Watt that included tribute bands of Misfits, Modern Lovers, Suicide, and the Ramones. i was Joey. here are some clips from the show.

Turf War as the Misfits "We are 138"

Color Me Impressed

the city of Atlanta has been killing it for a few years now with some of the best rock n roll around...but Turf War might just be the best goddamn band yet. always a great live band for a couple of years now they'd now releases an album that does it's best to capture what makes these Southern boys so fucking good.

their debut, Years Of Living Dangerously, is the kinda record that hits you in your gut. it's gotta that energy that only a lovable loser whose been beat down by years of bad choices and worse luck can produce. it's the story of 1000 late night benders and 1000 blurry eyed hangovers all crashing together in an ode to having a good time and having no regrets...even if we all die too young. it's what a good rock record should sound like: a little bit sad, a little bit angry, and with enough hooks & catchy choruses to make Tom Petty proud.

Nevermind is 20 Years Old Today!

20 years ago today Nevermind came out. 20 Fucking Years!

i was 13 years old in 8th grade listening to Guns N' Roses and Bell Biv Devoe and then Nevermind came out and it may be cliched as fucking hell but it definitely changed everything after that. it's weird to actually notice a cultural shift but being from a boring nowhere place like Augusta, GA listening to Nirvana (and later Sonic Youth) was a FUCKING HUGE way to separate myself from most of the redneck, jock, asshole kids i went to school with. they weren't just a band. not to me. not to lots of kids like me.

Nevermind is an album that never gets played in my home, my car, on my ipod. it's easily my least favorite of Nirvana's 3 studio albums. it's too slick. too polished. too overplayed. too fucking big. but i will still always love it...even if i never listen to another note ever again. so thanks for existing Nevermind. happy fucking birthday. and just think...that naked baby can probably fucking drink now.

Classic Songs With A Long History, Southern Boys Just Like You and Me

REM called it a career today. as an Athenian it makes me kinda sad...even if they haven't made a record i give a shit about since at least New Adventures in Hi-Fi. RIP the greatest rock and roll band from the South....other than Black Crowes (obviously).

New Music i am down with this week: The Icarus Line's Wildlife

the Icarus Line’s new long delayed album Wildlife is out finally. the Icarus Line were one of my favorite contemporary bands back in the early part of the 2000s. they came out of the late 90s Noise Rock/Post-Hardcore scene and turned from a Jesus Lizard soundalike into one of the best bands around by combining Fun House era Stooges, Psychocandy white noise, Spacemen 3 drone, and GN’R sleaze into a perfect hardrock blender with their 2003 record Penance Soiree. unfortunately no one was paying attention and the album went mostly unnoticed. they followed up that with the pretty solid Black Lives At The Golden Coast which was more eclectic and also was pretty off most critics radar.

and now 4 years later we have Wildlife. while not as instantly satisfying (but what really is?) as the previous records it’s still got some solid gems for fans. “King Baby” is a pretty good opener with just enough T.Rex stomp & groove, “Sin Man Sick Blues” is totally channeling the motherfucking Dead Boys, the single “We Sick” is a nasty little slab of punk blues, and my personal favorite is title track “Wildlife” which sounds like pure Lust For Life era Iggy. a few of the 13 songs feel like filler and i wish there were less mid tempo tracks and more rippers like Sick Blues…but still if you love your rock n roll strungout and in the gutter then The Icarus Line aren’t gonna let you down. recommended.

My Buddies Grape Soda are doing an East Coast tour, go see them.

Grape Soda is my favorite current Athens band, (especially with American Cheeseburger broken up and Bambara now calling New York home). i mean yes i am probably totally biased since i’m friends with and in another band with Ryan and Mat, but i am the kinda asshole who always thinks his friends’ bands suck and never goes to see them play. Grape Soda are the opposite. they are always fun and everyone ends up dancing. Grape Soda are doing a quick tour this summer. if they are coming to your town then check them out. organ and drum based psych pop. kinda like if Quasi was stoned all the time and listened to nothing but the Soul Jazz Studio One comps. plus Ryan runs Kindercore Records and he loves it when people come to shows and give him their demo tapes.

songs that changed my life: Can't Hardly Wait

Can't Hardly Wait by mmr421

Paul Westerberg "Can't Hardly Wait" (on SNL, 1993)...a pretty significant moment in my music loving life.

i think/pretty damn sure/know this was the first time i ever heard this song. i already owned Let It Be and Tim and Paul Westerberg's solo album 14 songs, but i hadn't delved further into the Replacements' catalogue yet by 1993. the unreleased Tim version of "Can't Hardly Wait" is tied with the Velvet's "Pale Blue Eyes" and Beach Boys "Girl Don't Tell Me" for my favorite song of all time. i can't even imagine how many times i've heard it. how many mix tapes/cds i've put it on. how many times i was drunk and depressed at 19 years old listening to it in a parked car crying about some fucking girl who ruined my summer and wondering if i was ever gonna get the fuck out of the shithole that is Augusta, GA before i found myself jumping off some "crummy water tower"

....anyways this is my favorite live performance of the song that i've seen.

My early Vote for best song of 2011

i'm probably a little biased, but Cheers To The Years is about the most damn catchy garage pop/rock and roll little number that any Atlanta boys could hope to produce. it's the kind of song you hear one time and you know exactly what the fuck Turf War is a bout....good times, sad times, and reckless times. keep your eyes peeled for their album in September, Years Of Living Dangerously, on Old Flame records. enjoy.

Turf War-Cheers To The Years by Old Flame Records

Everybody Needs A Little Alex Chilton

Alex Chilton's 1st solo album might be my favorite of all his records...Big Star and Box Tops included. i remember first reading about this album in highschool or maybe freshman year of college (97 or 98) in a review on Allmusic.com where they basically said it was the worst album of all time.

at that point in my life my exposure to Chilton had been The Replacements' name check and Big Star's records and "The Letter" by the Box Tops, but i couldn't imagine how someone who was involved in music that awesome could have made the WORST ALBUM OF ALL TIME. it took me years to track down a copy on CD (oh those days before you could just download shit). and when i finally heard it i was blown the fuck away. i mean you've got one of the great American pop rock songwriters of all time who wrote probably the most beautiful ballad this side of "Pale Blue Eyes" with "Thirteen" making a sloppy art-damaged wreck-of-a-fuck-you-pop-record (my personal favorite kind) but still with some of the most amazing gems of his career included (My Rival, Hey! Little Child, Alligator Man) that it was impossible not to love. plus that Boogie Shoes cover rules.

if you don't own it then you need to fix your life.

HEY HEY IT'S THE HORRORS

i enjoy the Horrors even in spite of their Tim Burton/Edward Gorey goth teen outfits and haircuts...i mean a good band needs a good schtick sometimes. i can appreciate that. some of the greatest bands of alltime dressed like cartoons and had silly made up names. besides, isn't it the music that matters?

and as far as that goes i thought their debut album of Cramps and Gruesomes inspired garage was mostly forgettable with a few good singles, but then they dropped Primary Colours outta nowhere and did such a good job aping 90s shoegaze and Pornography era Cure that i was totally sold from then on. now in 2011 they return with Skying which drops most of the My Bloody Valentine-ish elements of their previous effort and replaces it with a pretty healthy dose of The Psychedelic Furs. like A LOT of Psychedelic Furs. like a FUCK TON of Psychedelic Furs...like maybe that's the only tape they had in their van for a whole month. there's some Chameleons in there too and some dreampop and lots of other shit that i enjoy. and yeah i know it's lazy to say this band's new record sounds like X, Y, and Z...but i am a lazy fucking person.

anyways it's in no way as immediately satisfying a record as Primary Colours but i still think anyone who was a fan of that record is gonna dig Skying too. i'd recommend it.

Nirvana Forever

I make no apologies for the fact I am a 1990s suburban teenage cliche. I was 13 years old when Nevermind came out and at the time I was scrawny, dorky, not very popular, and very interested in music and so Nirvana easily became my favorite band because they were everything that all the kids I hated in middle school were not, weird. Liking Nirvana of course lead to me learning about bands like Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, The Jesus Lizard, and more importantly discovering 70s/80s punk and post-punk.

Nirvana's music will always be important to me but even more important is that Kurt was a shameless name dropper and I was a teenage sponge who bought up every recommendation. Almost every weekend of my early life was spent trying to get rides to Athens or Atlanta where they had real record shops so I could try and find the albums that I had on my Kurt List. Gang Of Four, The Wipers, The Raincoats, Melvins, Black Flag, Bad Brains, Scratch Acid, The Slits, Sex Pistols, etc. Which of course lead to more and more discoveries and so forth. It's the kind of dept to a band that will always give them a lofty status in my mind. So thanks Nirvana.
