REM called it a career today. as an Athenian it makes me kinda sad...even if they haven't made a record i give a shit about since at least New Adventures in Hi-Fi. RIP the greatest rock and roll band from the South....other than Black Crowes (obviously).
My 20 Favorite REM songs (at this moment off the top of my head)
a lot of hits, not a ton of deep cuts. almost all music from the 80s...nothing post Bill.

Darby Crash is still dead and John Lennon is still gonna get talked about more.
30 Years ago today, Darby Crash killed himself. his death would of course be massively overshadowed by John Lennon's murder. and so it goes.

RIP Jay Reatard

apparently the rumors are true, Jay Reatard is dead. what the fuck? 2010 is starting off just as bad as 2009. sad sad sad.
i thought Jay was awesome for his mix of Buzzcocks style pop-punk and The Clean style kiwi pop. he will be missed.
here's hom doing a rocking cover of the Go Betweens song "Don't Let Him Come Back".

goodbye Rowland

i know i'm late posting this, but i had been away from my computer the last week and didn't really have a chance to write about the passing of a post-punk legend, Rowland S. Howard. former member of the the greatest band of all time, The Birthday Party as well as a member of These Immoral Souls, The Boys Next Door, and Crime and the City Solution. he worked with Lydia Lunch, Nikki Sudden, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, and many many others. he's one of the most influential guitar players of all time and he will be truly missed.
here's Rowland playing a version of the Boys Next Door song he wrote "Shivers"
and this is a clip of him playing his song "She Cried" (my personal favorite).
and finally a clip of the Birthday Party ripping through "junkyard".
everyone's seen this clip, but who cares it rules. Tracy's shirt is a thing of amazement...topped only by his crotch thrusting. Rowland beating on his guitar like a percussion instrument while smoking a cig and looking like he could give a fuck is also un-fucking touchable.
