Dum Dum Girls = I Dig It

besides wanting to have sex with their singer, i am really digging the Dum Dum Girls' debut record cuz it's got some pretty catchy girl-group/beach boys pop influenced indie rock going on. No it isn't reinventing the wheel...but who the fuck wants that anyways? at my age all i want from a record is either catchy songs (this album has that) or for it to remind me of something else i used to like (covers that as well). if i was a pompous douchebag and was to score records this would probably be a 6 or so...but i am not. instead i can only say that if you enjoy The Pains Of Being Pure at Heart, Camera Obscura, or any other girl vocal lead retro indie rock bands of recent years then you are probably gonna enjoy this record too. so yeah, it's worth a download.

The Turf War Demo EP (free download)

if you are looking for a new rock band fix then i suggest to you TURF WAR out of Atlanta, GA (originally from Augusta). a young band that as burst onto the scene with catchy songs, a love of too much booze, rowdy live shows, and a deep appreciation for The Replacements.

for those of you going to your 1st SXSW this year....

First off, screw you cuz I didn't get to go this year. Secondly, have a good time. Don't bother trying to see all the bands you wanna see cuz it's impossible. Just pick a showcase every night and stay there. Its easier. Also don't worry about bringing drugs, you'll find some. Try and go to as many parties and free shit during the day as you can cuz they will have free booze and food. Also DO NOT WEAR YOUR BADGE AROUND YOUR NECK. This makes you a dork. Tuck that shit into your back pocket and only flash it when you have to. And finally you are basically at spring break for indie rock nerds...this means you will be able to get hella laid if you have even the slightest bit of game. Good luck and have fun.

oh yeah and go see my friends Ruby Isle if you get a chance. And tell em I sent you.

Bands I Love: The Nation of Ulysses

number 8 on my favorite bands of all time list

number of years i have been listening to them: since 1993
how i got into them: i was already a pretty huge Fugazi fan in 1993 and began buying every album by every band on Dischord because of that. i remember ordering Nation Of Ulysses' 13 Point Program to Destroy America, Shudder to Think's Get Your Goat, and the Faith/Void split album together. me = mind blown upon first hearing the NOU.
favorite album: PLAYS PRETTY FOR BABY!
favorite songs: Look Out! Soul Is Back, The Hickey Underworld, N-Sub Ulysses, A Comment On Ritual, You're My Miss Washington DC
direct influence on my musical taste: the Nation Of Ulysses influenced my ideas of what exactly a punk rock band could sound like, they also got me interested in Jazz (briefly) and most important of all they taught me about aesthetics in rock and roll and how important look and imagery can be.
