Sometimes I try to do things but it just doesn't work out the way I want it to, and I get real frustrated and then like I try hard to do it, and I like, take my time but it just doesn't work out the way I want it to. It's like, I concentrate on it real hard, but it just doesn't work out. And everything I do and everything I try, it never turns out. It's like, I need time to figure these things out, but there's always someone there going “hey mike, you know we've been noticing you've been having a lot of problems lately, you know? You need to maybe get away. And like, maybe you should talk about it, you'll feel a lot better.” And I'm all like “oh, nah, it's ok, you know. I'll figure it out. Just leave me alone, I'll figure it out, you know? I'm just working on it by myself.” And they go “well, you know, if you wanna talk about it, I'll be here, you know? And you'll probably feel a lot better if you talk about it. So why don't you talk about it?” I go “no, I don't want to! I'm ok. I'll figure it out myself!” But they just keep bugging me, they just keep bugging me, and it builds up inside.
So you're gonna be institutionalized. You'll come out brainwashed with bloodshot eyes. You won't have anything to say. They'll brainwash you until you see their way.
I'm not crazy - IN AN INSTITUTION!!! You're the one that's crazy - IN AN INSTITUTION!!! You're driving me crazy - IN AN INSTITUTION!!!
They stuck me in an institution, Said it was the only solution To give me the needed professional help to protect me from the enemy, myself.
I was in my room and I was just like staring at the wall thinking about everything, but then again I was thinking about nothing. And then my mom came in, and I didn't even know she was there. She called my name and I didn't hear her and then she started screaming “Mike, Mike!” And I go “what? What's the matter?” She goes “what's the matter with you?” I go “there's nothing wrong, mom.” Shes all “don't tell me that! You're on drugs!” I go “no mom, I'm not on drugs. I'm ok, I'm just thinking, you know? Why don't you get me a Pepsi?” She goes “No! You're on drugs!” I go “mom, I'm ok. I'm just thinking.” She goes “No! You're not thinking, you're on drugs! Normal people don't be acting that way!” I go “mom, just get me a Pepsi! Please, all I want is a Pepsi!” And she wouldn't give it to me! All I wanted was a Pepsi, just one Pepsi, and she wouldn't give it to me! Just a Pepsi!
They give you a white shirt with long sleeves! Tied around your back, you're treated like thieves! Drug you up because they're lazy! It's too much work to help a crazy!
I'm not crazy - IN AN INSTITUTION!!! You're the one who's crazy - IN AN INSTITUTION!!! You're driving me crazy - IN AN INSTITUTION!!!
They stuck me in an institution, Said it was the only solution To give me the needed professional help, to protect me from the enemy, myself.
I'm sitting in my room, when my mom and my dad came in. they pulled up a chair and they sat down. They go “mike, we need to talk to you.” And I go “ok, what's the matter?” They go “me and your mom, we've noticed that lately you've been having a lot of problems, and you've been going off for no reason, and we're afraid you're going to hurt somebody, and we're afraid you're going to hurt yourself. So we decided that it would be in your best interest if we put you somewhere where you could get the help that you need.” And I go “wait, what are you talking about, WE decided? MY best interests? How do you know what MY best interest is? How can you say what MY best interest is? What are you trying to say? I'M crazy? When I went to YOUR schools, I went to YOUR churches, I went to YOUR institutional learning facilities? So how can you say I'M crazy?”
They say they're gonna fix my brain. Alleviate my suffering and my pain. But by the time they fix my head, Mentally I'll be dead.
I'm not crazy - IN AN INSTITUTION!!! You're the one who's crazy - IN AN INSTITUTION!!! You're driving me crazy - IN AN INSTITUTION!!!

Doesn't matter, I'll probably get hit by a car anyways.
number of years i have been listening to them: since 1991 how i got into them: i was already aware of Black Flag from childhood thanks to their inclusion on the Repo Man soundtrack (which was one of my favorite movies when i was growing up. we owned it on VHS and although i knew jack shit about Punk rock…i did know i thought it was pretty awesome.) but i can’t say i really began listening to Black Flag until years later. as i mentioned before, 1991 was a big year of discovery for me. it was 8th grade and i had just been introduced to the world of punk rock. i honestly don’t remember what magazine it was, but i wanna say Guitar World, that had an issue where they listed the 20 greatest punk rock records of all time and on that list were both Damaged and First Four Years by Black Flag...and so naturally being a kid who likes owning the essentials i purchased both of these cds. favorite album: First Four Years favorite songs: depression, six pack, nervous breakdown, gimme gimme gimme, slip it in, black coffee direct influence on my musical taste: they are the yardstick by which i judge all other punk bands.
of all the memories i have from tours, one of my all time favorites was driving across the wastelands of the Midwest while listening to an audio tape copy of GET IN THE VAN by Henry Rollins. it’s a collection of journal writings from Henry’s time in Black Flag. it’s half band-biography and half rambling self loathing retarded poetry/thoughts on life (dumb thoughts), and whining. there's some serious livejournal level cryassery going on. basically Hank hates everyone and Greg Ginn is mean. there are some really funny moments and even some Black Flag stories that really can inspire a young band out on their first ever tour. but mostly the best parts of the book are Rollins’ weird poems or thoughts or whatthefuckever.
sample: "I touch her hair. Her shoulders clench together and she stares at the ground. She looks like a stone bird. I am an iceberg. Everyday I float farther and farther out to sea. But that can’t be. An iceberg feels no pain. An iceberg doesn’t feel cold. I feel cold. I feel distant. There is no one. There is nothing. That’s where I am. She won’t look me in the eye anymore since I asked if I could kiss her. Even wanting turns her cold."
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! oh to be a kid again. the book is full of nuggets like that. we all laughed our asses off for hours. also the audio book version is read by Rollins himself...which takes the awesomeness up about 20 notches. i don't even know why they bothered with a print version of this fucking thing. having Henry read is own journals is far more entertaining than anything the Rollins Band ever recorded.
anyways, if you ever find this…do yourself a favor and get it. it will make your mind implode. EPIC. fucking EPIC.
when i was in highschool i always wanted to start a band that sounded like a punk version of Creedence...then someone gave me a copy of a Gun Club record and i realized it had already been done. The Gun Club were one of a number of 80s punk bands to embrace CCR's roots rock/swamp boogie sound (Firehose, X, Green River, and pretty much the whole grunge scene...hell, Nirvana started off as a CCR coverband called The Sell Outs). anyways Gun Club covered CCR on their second album Miami ....which may not be as essential as their debut album, but still pretty much rules.

first off thanks to DJ for sending me this link to download. i used to have a bootleg of this years ago but it was lost in the sands of time. just click on that link if you are interested in putting some Black Flag in your life.
fucking badassness.
These sessions were actually recorded sometime in 1983. They are the recordings that occured while Black Flag were entangled in legal battles with MCA records and couldn't release any recorded material. This took place in between the classic "Damaged" album and yet to be released "My War" album. Unfortunately, these were to be the only recordings to feature the classic 5-man Black Flag line-up.

Fang performing their snotty punk rock classic "the money will roll right in" a song that Mudhoney does a great version of, as well as Nirvana. Just listening to this makes me wish I was a 15 year old skate punk.
