oh man, for a good laugh check out XFM's Top 100 songs of the decade. link here for massive comedy.
anything that shitty and short sighted had to be voted on by fans. as usual England is not unlike a 14 year old girl with a new crush every fucking week.
8 songs by Muse? for real? hahahaha. oh man, you Brits and your little lists.
things England is good at
make boring period dramas
enslaving the world
stealing music from black americans and selling it back to us with bad teeth and funny haircuts
things you don’t know shit about
food
weather
how to make a fucking list that’s worth a shit

Goodbye Jerry
on my way to Athens for the memorial of a friend tonight.
Jerry Fuchs died over a week ago. he the was the drummer of Maserati as well as !!!, Turing Machine, LCD Soundsystem, and about every fucking band in New York City from one time or another. but that doesn't matter. what matters was the he was a really awesome guy and everyone who ever knew him is really sad right now.
Me & Jerry weren't close friends, but still he was someone i always enjoyed seeing and hanging out with. i met him about 5 or 6 years ago when my band was playing a show with some of his friends, Panthers, in Atlanta. i'd seen him play drums in Turing Machine and thought he was a total badass so i was honestly a little intimidated to talk to him. he came up after the show and started talking to us and we got to drinking and he was really nice and really funny. about a year after that he was in Athens for New Year's (i think...maybe it was just Christmas break) and he and i got drunk as shit and talked about being old dudes and about our hairlines and made fun of ourselves and had some good laughs. i had an instant man-crush for life. Jerry was fucking rad. totally unpretentious and amazingly talented and just really fucking funny and really nice. i am gonna miss him.
RIP, dude.

If My Blog Was A Movie It Would Be A Teen Melodrama
i like to pretend that my tumblr is a teen melodrama set sometime in the late 80s or early 90s in some boring suburban town. it’s kinda like a mix between the existential ramblings of Dazed and Confused and the dumb party scenes of Can’t Hardly Wait with maybe some class warfare stolen from the Outsiders for good measure.you know something that wouldn’t do well in the theater but would get a nice cult following on DVD.
there’d be a smart ass angsty kid who would be the hero, and a hot chick with the face of Rachel Leigh Cook and the ass of Blake Lively that our hero pines for, and his friends would be a nerdy sci-fi/horror loving guy, a punk rock dude, and a smart awkward chick who we all know he’s gonna end up with in the end.
and it would have a killer soundtrack
Sonic Youth- schizophrenia
The Verlaines- pyromaniac
The Undertones- teenage kicks
The Replacements- sixteen blue
The Strokes- barely legal
The Nerves- when you find out
The Beach Boys- girl don’t tell me
The Lemonheads- if i could talk i’d tell you
The Clean- i wait around
Teenage Fanclub- star sign
Lilys- will my lord be gardening
Shocking Pinks- emily
The Jesus & Mary Chain- happy when it rains
Velvet Underground- there she goes again
The Seeds- can’t seem to make you mine
Buzzcocks- love is lies
Thin Lizzy- romeo and the lonely girl
Neil Young- everybody knows this is nowhere
Tall Dwarfs- baby it’s over
Husker Du- i apologize
Turf War- cheers to the years
Johnny Thunders- you can’t put your arms around a memory

When Bad Lit becomes Art
of all the memories i have from tours, one of my all time favorites was driving across the wastelands of the Midwest while listening to an audio tape copy of GET IN THE VAN by Henry Rollins. it’s a collection of journal writings from Henry’s time in Black Flag. it’s half band-biography and half rambling self loathing retarded poetry/thoughts on life (dumb thoughts), and whining. there's some serious livejournal level cryassery going on. basically Hank hates everyone and Greg Ginn is mean. there are some really funny moments and even some Black Flag stories that really can inspire a young band out on their first ever tour. but mostly the best parts of the book are Rollins’ weird poems or thoughts or whatthefuckever.
sample: "I touch her hair. Her shoulders clench together and she stares at the ground. She looks like a stone bird. I am an iceberg. Everyday I float farther and farther out to sea. But that can’t be. An iceberg feels no pain. An iceberg doesn’t feel cold. I feel cold. I feel distant. There is no one. There is nothing. That’s where I am. She won’t look me in the eye anymore since I asked if I could kiss her. Even wanting turns her cold."
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! oh to be a kid again. the book is full of nuggets like that. we all laughed our asses off for hours. also the audio book version is read by Rollins himself...which takes the awesomeness up about 20 notches. i don't even know why they bothered with a print version of this fucking thing. having Henry read is own journals is far more entertaining than anything the Rollins Band ever recorded.
anyways, if you ever find this…do yourself a favor and get it. it will make your mind implode. EPIC. fucking EPIC.

Velvet Goldmine Still Sucks After All These Years
Velvet Goldmine was on earlier tonight. i watched it for the 1st time in years to see if my opinions about it had changed. they hadn't. it still sucks. i know a lot of people who love this movie, but i think most of them are tricking themselves.
i remember when that movie came out i was really excited because i've always loved 70s glitter rock. i had to drive to Atlanta because it wasn't playing in my town and then i watched it and i got a pretty empty feeling afterwards, having wasted so much of my time being stoked about it. i thought it looked fucking cool and the costumes were great and the soundtrack was killer but the story was total crap (which is kinda what you can say about every Todd Haynes movie). i know it's supposed to be a sort of fairytale about an imagined love affair between young Bowie and Iggy Pop and also a love letter to the era when being a dandy was all the rage and also it has something to do with Oscar Wilde being an alien...or something. and all that sounds great on paper, but it hardly works as a movie. really it's just a bad ripoff of Citizen Kane with some Rocky Horror Picture Show thrown in for good measure.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch is so much better a version of this movie than Velvet Goldmine could've ever hope to be. about the only thing amusing was Ewan's Curt Wild character and his weird mash-up of Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, and Kurt Cobain.

The Agenda and Turf War, next Saturday @ The Soul Bar
Los Agendas will in Augusta next Saturday night doing battle with our friends Turf War. it's gonna be a whole lot of boys trying to pretend they are either in the Stooges or the Replacements. which should be a drunken good time for everyone there. if it were Masters Week then Tiger Woods would show up, but it's not...so instead hopefully the city of Augusta will come out and say hello.

Most Underrated Band of the 90s = Teenage Fanclub
Bandwagonesque came out in 1991 and SPIN magazine called them "THE SOUND OF THE 90s". like if Dinosaur Jr. and Big Star had a baby. it beat out Nevermind for album of year from SPIN...but we all know how that turned out in the end.
live footage of Teenage Fanclub at Reading 91. "God Knows It's True", "The Concept", & "Satan" included. the quality of this vid is total shit, but you get the idea. do yourself a favor and download some Fanclub. recommended jams (besides the songs in this clip) "Metal Baby", "What You Do To Me", "Star Sign", "Without You", "It's All In My Mind".

I Miss 2002
while reading Pitchfork’s review of the Julian Casablancas solo album (which took about 500 words too many to just say “hey, this shit is kinda boring”. man you know it broke their heart to admit it. all our heroes die.) i was happy to see they posted a link to this performance of the Strokes on Letterman back in 02 when the world was still young and those of us with hope saw these scruffy rich kids from new york not as opportunist poseurs stealing all their good ideas from Blondie and Television but as champions of quality rock n’ roll returning to the airwaves. bask in the glory of what coulda been and try to forget about the fact this decade closed out about the same as the 90s did, with a lot of bad pop music dominating.
